2018 Offseason: Wide Receivers 49ers should target
The San Francisco 49ers need a true, number one wide receiver to help out star QB Jimmy Garoppolo. It doesn’t look like Julio Jones or Antonio Brown will be available this off season. Darn. But there are great options available. Let’s take a look.
Priority #1 (What’s best): Sammy Watkins
The 49ers should absolutely go after WR Sammy Watkins. Don’t be fooled by his average (at least for great wide receivers) 549 yards this season so far this season. Sammy Watkins would be an excellent number one option with Garoppolo at the helm. The 49ers would receive a true, dominant #1 WR and take away a threat from their L.A. Rams rival. Watkins is the best prototypical #1 receiver the 49ers will have on the market.
Look for GM John Lynch to pursue Watkins this offseason.
Priority #2 (It’d be nice if…): Davonte Adams
It’d be nice if the 49ers had a realistic shot at Davonte Adams. But don’t be surprised if the Packers either franchise Adams or sign him to a long term contract. The Packers have a recent history of locking up their prominent wide receivers in Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.
Aaron Rodgers targeted Adams 121 times in 2016, second only to the great Jordy Nelson. I don’t anticipate this connection to end soon.
Priority #3 (Less flashy but solid option): Jarvis Landry
Jarvis Landry could become one of the hottest names on the market in the 2018 offseason. Since 2014, he caught 376 passes for almost 4,000 yards with 21 touchdowns. Even with Cutler at the helm, Landry almost has 100 receptions for 1,000 yards. This guy could be a stud with Garoppolo throwing to him.
Priority #4 (Great pickup for the right price): Allen Robinson
Don’t get it twisted: Allen Robinson could be a star in the NFL with the right QB. Jimmy Garoppolo might just be Robinson’s savior. In 2015, Robinson had an incredible season with over 1,400 receiving yards despite working with a mediocre QB in Blake Bortles. Yet, fans should question his durability. He has appeared in only one game this season after tearing his ACL.
The 24 year-old would be a solid option for Jimmy Garoppolo’s 49ers next season. Expect the Niners to pursue Robinson for the right price.
Priority #5 (If all else fails…) John Brown
So far this season, Brown has 271 receiving yards to 19 receptions. He could be a decent option with an elite quarterback. I would put Brown last on my list, if I was the 49ers.
Take Josh Gordon on your 2018 off season Christmas wish list, 49ers fans. He isn’t scheduled to be a restricted free agent until 2019 and it would take a lot of draft picks for the Browns to even consider letting this guy go. But it’s O.K. to dream, right?
Notable mentions: WR John Brown, WR Taylor Gabriel, WR Dontrelle Inman
